How Neuromuscular Therapy Reduces Pain & Increases Range of Motion
By Coach Johnny B (Ms, CFL3, LMT)
When you’re dealing with pain, tightness, or simply feeling like you can’t move a certain way without getting stuck, it’s rarely just one muscle causing trouble. More often, it’s a chain of tension, compensations, and neuromuscular guarding (the brain causing the muscle to contract to protect the body) that keeps your body from performing at its best.

The classic example we love is that nasty muscle knot in the upper back, just below your neck, that makes it hard to look over your shoulder when you change lanes in the car. It’s usually due to forward head posture, which we all adopt when we spend all our time on computers or phones.
Getting rid of these terrible muscle monsters can be done in several ways, but one of the most studied, tested, and effective methods is a manual technique called Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT).
NMT is a highly targeted, evidence-based manual therapy approach that focuses on the connection between your nervous and muscular systems. Instead of simply rubbing tight areas, NMT works by:
- Identifying dysfunctional movement patterns
- Releasing hyperactive trigger points through deep continuous pressure
- Improving blood flow to restricted tissues via a massage technique like effleurage
- Calming the nervous system’s “protective” response via techniques like deep tissue gliding
- Restoring optimal length–tension relationships in the muscle via assisted stretching and mobilizations
Think of it as upgrading your body’s software and hardware. You’re not just loosening a muscle: the therapist administering it is retraining the system that controls it.
In addition to better movement, NMT also resolves pain by reducing tissue overload or by preventing the nervous system from constantly firing “danger” signals. NMT reduces pain through mechanisms like:
🔹 Trigger point release: calms irritated muscle fibers that refer pain into joints and limbs
🔹 Improved circulation: restores nutrient delivery, decreases inflammation, and accelerates recovery
🔹 Neuromuscular reset: reduces protective guarding that keeps your body stuck in painful patterns
🔹 Better joint mechanics: when muscles move the way they’re supposed to, joints stop screaming

Athletes and everyday movers often feel immediate relief because NMT quickly addresses both the muscular and neurological components of pain.
The Master of NMT
All of the massage therapists at ASR are heavily trained in NMT, but our dude Matt Holton is an absolute MASTER of the technique. He has spent years studying it under legends and exploring its roots in Thailand. All of the training means he doesn’t just press on muscles; he reads movement like a roadmap and knows exactly where to intervene to create the most significant change. While it might not be as “relaxing” as other massage techniques, it is undoubtedly the most effective for treating movement dysfunction.
Whether you’re lifting, running, golfing, training for Hyrox, or simply trying to feel better day to day, Matt’s NMT sessions are one of the most effective ways to reboot your system.
Who Benefits From NMT?
NMT is incredibly effective for:
- Low back pain
- Neck stiffness and headaches
- Shoulder mobility limitations
- Hip impingement
- Hamstring or quad tightness
- After heavy training blocks
- Post-injury movement restrictions
- Athletes need consistent recovery between sessions.
If you’ve been chasing pain or struggling with mobility, NMT is the missing link you’ve been looking for.
